Want some rice in your coffee? Huskup turns rice husk into cups

Huskup reusable coffee cup

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and the absolute urgency we have to combat our coffee cup problem has resulted in some pretty cool innovations. Enter Huskup, a reusable cup made from rice husks that normally get incinerated.

Huskup says that 125 million tonnes of rice husk produced globally each year get burnt, while the UK throws away 7 million takeaway coffee cups every single day, so the new brand is essentially killing two polluting birds with one stone. It admits it's only making 'a small dent' in the husk issue but intends to make 'a big impact' on our single-use plastic problem.

The Huskup, available in twelve different designs (£10.95 each), is free from plastic, trees, BPA and melamine but is actually pretty durable and dishwasher-safe. And yet, when it gets too trashed to use, it totally biodegrades thanks to microbial action (it's certified to European compostability standard EN 13432! Sexy.)
