The little eco-friendly kingdom of Bhutan has been ranked number one in a list of the top adventure holiday destinations for 2017.
Nestled on the eastern edge of the Himalayas, Bhutan famously prioritises the happiness of its people and the protection of its environment over financial development, and has achieved carbon-negative status for its efforts.
No wonder, then, that it is the top destination during the UN's International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
The list was compiled by travel expert G Adventures, based on world events and its own sales trends. Bhutan was followed by Canada – which will be opening its national parks free of charge for the whole of 2017 – and Montenegro, Iran and Egypt.
The Ministry of Tourism in Madagascar, ranked sixth in the list, is currently undertaking a project to promote sustainable tourism on the island republic.
