Breath control 'key to better sleep'

Sleeping outside

A new book suggests taking control of our breathing could be the key to better sleep.

Ayurvedic Sleep Consultant Anandi says she overcame her own insomnia – also apparently suffered by Madonna, George Clooney, Martha Stewart and Tom Ford – by practising the holistic approach of Ayurveda, which uses the breath as a healing tool.

In her book Breathe Better, Sleep Better she presents various breathing exercises as part of 'breath therapy', developed to calm the nervous system to increase levels of the sleep-inducing hormone serotonin.

"You can't control your heart or your hormones with your mind, but you can with your breath. No amount of herbs will do the same thing as connecting to the breath," says Anandi.

"Just by bringing your attention to your breath, you will change everything!"
