A company that manages over 7,500 holiday homes in the UK says it has seen a 32 per cent increase in domestic holiday bookings this January compared to the same month last year, and has had 4.2 million website visitors since Christmas.

Sykes Cottages adds that bookings in the Lake District have increased by 67 per cent and Wales 40 per cent.

"We're seeing holidays in the UK fly off the shelf this January with greater demand than ever before. Our website has handled over 4.2 million holiday searches since Christmas proving the current strength of the market," says Graham Donoghue, CEO, Sykes Cottages.

"It's phenomenal to see how many people are choosing to holiday in the UK rather than go abroad this year."

As the company manages property owned privately, the figures could also suggest an increase in people using the sharing economy for their hols.
