Waitrose joins FareShare to expand food waste reduction campaign

FareShare FoodCloud app

Waitrose says it is continuing to tackle food waste by redistributing surplus food to charities via FareShare's app.

FareShare's FoodCloud app sends text alerts to local food distribution charities when individual supermarket branches input information about their surplus food, letting them know when it's ready to be collected.

Waitrose will trial the FoodCloud app in 25 stores initially, with plans to roll out the initiative across the nationwide Waitrose network within twelve months if the pilot is successful.

“This will help food get to those who need it quickly and make a real difference in helping feed vulnerable people," says Tor Harris, Head of Sustainability at Waitrose.

"Reducing food waste is a top priority for us, as is supporting local communities, and this trial will help our branches focus their resources even more effectively."

The supermarket chain says the trial will build on relationships branches already have with local groups as well as recruiting new ones'.
