British inventor Trevor Bayliss developed his wind-up radio back in 1991, and the idea of literally cranking up the music hasn't gone away.

Over on Kickstarter, the maker of Jiffy – 'The Charger That Keeps On Giving' – is seeking funding to work on its kinetic-energy-powered emergency phone and gadget charger. Ideal for situations such as camping, power cuts and when you've spent too long reading Clearly (obvs), a Jiffy can be yours for a €25 (£20) pledge.
