Californian vegan bag brand Hozen Collection is now available in the UK via Students of Design (AKA SODS).
Made in small batches at a fair-wage factory in Los Angeles, Hozen's luxury handbags (from £300) are made from synthetic leather and suede, with zips and threads manufactured from 100 per cent recycled post-consumer plastic bottles, natural rubber and remnant rope. Even the labels and packaging are made out of organic cotton or recycled paper.
The brand – named Hozen after the Japanese word for 'sustainability' – was founded by Rae Nicoletti, a former student of hand leather work under Hermes master artisan Beatrice Amblard in San Francisco. Representing a shift away from the damaging effects of the leather industry, the bags have a circular shape 'as a symbol of conservation and compassion', says SODS.
Ten per cent of Hozen Collection's profits are also donated to the non-profit organisation Mercy for Animals.
