More veg, less sugar: summer 2018 trends revealed

Vegetables on a barbecue

What's on your plate this summer? According to new trend analyses, it's likely to be vegan-friendly and low-sugar.

Mintel – the global predictions people – looked at new products appearing in shops worldwide and spotted an increase in vegan foods ready to throw on the barbecue.

"Vegan options are on the rise, with several UK retailers such as Sainsbury's, Tesco and just recently Waitrose launching extensive vegan lines in their stores," says Melanie Zanoza Bartelme, Global Food Analyst.

"Flavour-bursting new varieties of vegan alternatives made from innovative ingredients like Indian jackfruit, which due to its texture and flavour is becoming an increasingly popular meat substitute, will be the star of the vegan barbecue this summer."

Mintel notes that 'a clear trend has emerged' to reduce meat consumption; 28 per cent of adults in the UK have opted 'to cut, limit or reduce' their intake in the six months to March 2017, says the organisation.

And as for desserts and drinks, there appears to be a buzz around low-sugar ice cream and more natural soft drinks like 'bold flavoured sparkling waters'.

"This summer, expect to see less lemonade and more truly original mineral waters with natural flavours far beyond lemon or cucumber," comments Jenny Zegler, Associate Director, Mintel Food & Drink.

Even snacks are savoury rather than sweet, especially those 'designed to be a companion to beer' says Mintel – noting the impact of the World Cup and barbecues.
