Raise a glass to first biodegradable water bottle

Choose Water bottles

Choose plastic or choose paper? New water brand Choose Water says it has launched the world's first plastic-free water bottle, made from biodegradable, naturally derived materials.

Made in Edinburgh and filled with water from the Cairngorms, Choose Water bottles are designed as a fast-degrading alternative to single-use plastic bottles which can take a mind-blowing 450 years to decompose in the sea or landfill. In fact, Choose Water says its bottles are made from a substance that's actually beneficial to ocean life if it ends up in the drink.

Choose Water has gone from the kitchen table of British inventor James Longcroft to smashing its crowdfunding target of £25,000 in its first 50 hours, rising to nearly £50,000. As well as bringing its product to market, Choose Water also supports Water for Africa.

"After a year and a half of trial and error, two small fires, an explosion and quite a few minor injuries we have finally done it!" says James.

Only a limited number of the bottles will be sold during a trial stage, with the public invited to give feedback.
