Tesco hops on board Rainforest Alliance chocolate scheme

Cocoa beans

Tesco says 100 per cent of its cocoa is now sourced from sustainably managed farms, meaning it will display the Rainforest Alliance Certified green frog logo on all of its own-brand chocolate. And the supermarket chain has hopped on board the initiative at a great time: all Tesco-branded Easter eggs have been certified in time for the Easter Bunny to go shopping.

The Rainforest Alliance supports communities that grow cocoa in a way that protects soils and wildlife as well as increase farmers' incomes.

Tesco actually started switching to Rainforest Alliance Certified cocoa in 2016 and going the whole hog is part of its commitment with WWF to reduce 'the environmental impact of the average UK shopping basket' by half.

"Certification schemes, such as Rainforest Alliance, are a great tool for people to use when looking for products that meet a certain level of social, economic and environmental standards," comments Emma Keller, Head of Food Commodities at WWF UK.

"It's great to see 100 per cent of Tesco's own brand Easter eggs are now carrying the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal."
