Waitrose Duchy Organic goes bananas for compostable packaging

Waitrose Duchy Organic bananas

Waitrose's Duchy Organic bananas will now be packaged in a bag made with non-GM corn, that can be composted at home or used as a food bin caddy liner.

You might have seen Duchy Organic bananas' plastic bags already replaced with a plastic band, but Waitrose & Partners says this was just while trials were going ahead. The new compostable bag removes the need for plastic box liners while the 'nanas are on the shelves, while also making it clear to shoppers which produce is organic and which isn't.

Waitrose's Tor Harris says the bananas are 'the first of our fresh produce to be packaged in our ground-breaking home compostable bag', suggesting there's more to come. The banana bags alone will save 18 tonnes of plastic per year, the retailer estimates.
