Tesco says it's now stocking twice as many products from the exclusive vegan-friendly Wicked Kitchen range, after sales of chilled vegan foods increased by 25 per cent. Meanwhile, Waitrose has seen sales of vegan and vegetarian products rise by 85 per cent compared to last year and has added 25 new own-label meat-free products this month.
Developed by plant-based food innovator Derek Sarno (pictured below) for Tesco, the Wicked Kitchen range now includes treats like Pesto Lasagne, Spicy Mushroom and Veg Sourdough Pizza, and Charred Pineapple Dream Cake.
"At the start of the year, I said that veganism was going mainstream, and – as plant-based options are taking over the supermarket shelves – that belief is fast becoming a reality," he says.
New vegan meals at Waitrose include Vegan Moroccan Inspired Aubergine and Grain Bake, and Vegan Mac and Greens, plus Porcini Mushroom Powder – which can be used like nutritional yeast flakes to add an umami hit to vegan dishes.
