The Homebuilding & Renovating Show hits London's ExCeL from September 23rd to 25th, providing shed-loads of advice and demonstrations on self-building, renovating, extending, converting and DIYing.
Among the exhibitors, masterclasses, seminars and demos will be plenty of info on creating your own dream eco-home – as Cornelia and Rob Gregory discovered at the Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show in 2013.
The couple lived together in a two-up, two-down terraced house in London for over five years and realised that climbing the property ladder would be out of their financial reach in the capital. By moving to a cottage in Guildford the Gregorys were able to start that climb.
After planning restrictions resulted in knocking down the cottage to build their own house, and obtaining council consent, Cornelia and Rob attended the Southern Homebuilding & Renovating Show and found an architectural practice to meet their needs.
MatchBox Architects, based in Weybridge, worked with them to create a 220sqm property complete with a rainwater harvesting system, thermal insulation, photovoltaic panels and a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system – all of which considerably lowered the household's annual electricity and gas bills.
With their eight-year-old child and a dog, the family lives in an outstanding conservation area, surrounded by woods and rivers.
