New guides help feed your freezer, not your bin

A huge 15 million tonnes of food end up in British wheelie bins every year, most of which is still fine to eat – costing the average household £470, or even £700 for a big family.

While the UK reduced its food wastage by 21 per cent between 2007 and 2012, that's still a huge number of complete meals heading to landfill.

Household appliance retailer AO.com has made available downloadable meal planners, recipes, advice on labelling and a guide to freezing food to help people cut this food waste and spend the money – the equivalent of a holiday or new bit of home technology – on something better than feeding the bin.

"A few changes to the way you shop for food, and use it once it's in your kitchen, can ensure you get the most from your weekly shop," says Andrew Kirkcaldy, Head of Brand at AO.com.
