Tesco says it has experienced a rise in sales of eco-friendly cleaning products of nearly 45 per cent – but that stats suggest other consumers are being put off by their 'premium' prices.
In response, the supermarket giant has launched Eco Active, an own-label cleaning range made of plant-based, biodegradable, non-toxic ingredients and independently tested and certified by the EU Ecolabel.
The Eco Active washing-up liquid, multi-surface cleaner, two fabric conditioners, two laundry detergents and toilet cleaner are also packed in bottles that are up to 45 per cent recycled plastic and themselves recyclable.
They are priced from £1 to £4 each – 'at least 50 per cent' lower than those of competing brands, says Tesco.
"Demand for eco-cleaning products in the UK is at an all-time high with shoppers more aware of how they can protect the planet through informed choices that start in their homes," comments Tesco Household Goods Product Developer Sanjeev Kaushal, who developed Eco Active.
"Customers tells us that they want to buy eco-cleaning products but they must be effective, affordable, easily available and independently certified to not harm the environment.
"They also want complete transparency on how they are produced, the ingredients they contain and the impact they have on the environment. We believe our new range of products answers all that criteria."
Tesco is also exclusively selling the new Ecover Ocean Plastic washing-up liquid, in bottles made from 50 per cent ocean plastic, while Fairy says 2018 will see the launch its Ocean Plastic washing-up bottle made completely from post-consumer recycled plastic and ocean plastic.
