Write this down: grow your own chilli plants from pencils

Sprout Habanero pencil

Sprout has released a new chilli-lovers' edition of its plantable pencils.

The pencils can be used like any ordinary HB but feature a special organic seed capsule in place of an eraser. When they are too short to write with they can be planted in soil and seedlings will sprout from the end.

The Sprout Knockout Chilli pack (£4.90) contains three pencils – hot Red Cayenne (20,000 on the Scoville scale), hotter Purira Pepper (50,000 sco) and even hotter, Orange Habanero (210,000 sco – ouch).

Invented by three MIT students, the Sprout Pencil is also available in flower, vegetable and herb varieties, with different colours for different plants.
