Compostable carrier bags hit Coronation Street

Co-op Coronation Street

If you watch Coronation Street you'll have seen that Weatherfield has a branch of real-life supermarket Co-op – now complete with the chain's compostable carrier bags.

Co-op has been rolling out its compostable carrier bags for a few months, including in Greater Manchester. They've been designed to do double-duty as kitchen waste caddy liners, so they've been replacing single-use plastic bags in branches of Co-op located in areas where the Local Authority provides household food waste recycling collections.

You might have seen the green shopping bags on ITV's flagship soap last week.

"Reducing the environmental impact of our products is a priority, and we are focussed on eliminating single-use plastic," says Alison Jones, Customer Director, Co-op.

"Coronation Street is all about local life and it is an exciting development that our green alternative to the plastic bag is now available for residents of The Street."
