Co-op Food says the introduction of compostable carrier bags in over 1,000 branches has removed around 60 million single-use plastic carrier bags.
Announced in September, the move is part of the Co-op's campaign to reduce plastic in its stores. The compostable bags (5p each – the same as plastic ones) are available in areas where the Local Authority provides household food waste recycling, because they're designed to be reused as food waste caddy liners. You can also, theoretically, pop them in your own compost bin.
The next step for Co-op is to remove all black and dark plastic packaging, such as black ready-meal trays, from its own-brand products by next year.
