If you're thinking about Christmas shopping this weekend, how about keeping it small? Small Business Saturday is back for a fifth year on December 2nd, with independent shops, cafes and craftspeople getting involved across the country, both online and IRL.
There'll be special offers and incentives like free parking in some places, plus the warm and fuzzies that come from knowing your money is going to a real person – maybe from your own community – and not a massive multinational company.
Eco home store ItDoesTheJob.com has also suggested some really little things you can do to support small businesses, like taking your own reusable shopping bags, remembering to close the doors when you leave a shop so the owner retains heat and reduces their bills, and dining in local restaurants and pubs.
Word of mouth is really important to small businesses who don't have huge advertising budgets, so the shop also urges shoppers to pass on local recommendations to their family and friends.
