Take a veggie break in Leicester

Leicester's concentration of vegetarian and vegan restaurants has resulted in a dedicated animal-free short package holiday.

The Stay Play Explore Vegetarian short break (£129 for two people) offers a choice of experiences including dining at Mirch Masala and Shivali, vegan cocktail making at 33 Cank Street, afternoon tea at the White Peacock and treatments at Lush. Overnight accommodation is also included.

"For a population of approximately 320,000, we probably have the greatest concentration of vegetarian restaurants in Europe," says Amit Gokani, a member of the Leicester Vegetarian and Vegan Group, speaking to the Leicester Mercury.

"The fact that the word 'vegan' was originated from Leicester in 1944 by Donald Watson gives Leicester a great historic past regarding the origins of veganism."

The holiday was created by the Leicester Vegetarian and Vegan Group and Leicester Shire Promotions.
